The truth I have seen over and over again, is that we are all one. We are interconnected. To oversimplify we could perhaps say the old cliche: a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. You could consider the chain to be a community, city, country, even the entirety of humanity. You could expand even further to say the chain is all beings on this planet, and beyond but for the purpose of this particular article I want you to consider that ALL humans are one. If this pandemic can do anything positive, it would be to open our eyes to the very real ways this interconnectedness affects us. I believe in a world where people see and honor this truth: that what happens to one really happens to us all. I believe there’s no end to what we can accomplish when we honor our interconnectedness. Idealistic? Maybe, but ignoring the truth is catastrophic and if you haven’t seen the ways that division, fear and hatred make everything worse (including if not especially so your own life) then you haven’t been paying attention. It’s easy to point the finger, but through interconnectedness we see, that we are really just pointing straight back at ourselves. It’s time for a different narrative, it’s time to honor the truth: we are interconnected. We are only as strong as the most vulnerable among us and it is our duty to uplift and take care of each other. In the USA we are at a particularly challenging point, people are scared, confused, losing their homes and income, people are literally dying. It doesn’t have to be this way. We can take care of each other. I have a dream where every single person in the USA is a millionaire, and I don’t think it’s that farfetched. We can build a system that takes care of everyone, empowers us to do our best work, so we can take better care of our brothers and sisters all around the world. A very select group of people (who have benefited greatly from interconnectedness-yet seem to try and deny its very existence) have convinced a surprisingly large group of people that ideas such as Universal Healthcare or Basic Income are scary “socialist” ideas but in reality all these ideas aim to do is lift some simple burdens, strengthen the chain at the most vulnerable points and bring us all into a new era. We can THRIVE, we can do fucking anything, but we need to start by taking care of each other, and electing officials who will do what they can to bring us together and take care of all people, or at the very least stop trying to further the divide. I want you to take a deep breath and look inside yourself, align with your deepest values and refuse to live out of fear. Interconnectedness thrives in the absence of fear, it knows only love.
