You know what's cool?
As I see the increase in division, the uprising in conspiracy theories and the general distrust human beings have for on another, it’s obvious that social media has done a number on our collective psyche. It’s not that social media is all bad, it’s really not. Especially in a year like we’ve all had, where real, in person socialization hasn’t been much of an option. As a touring musician I see the blessing of being able to keep up with all of my friends from around the world. We can share information, funny videos, music, news and all sorts of really cool stuff. Still, facebook, instagram or whatever the fuck else, are generally kind of bummer places to be.
Many times over the years I’ve taken it upon myself to do my part: make social media less of a bummer place. If we want bad news, or to hear people complain, or to have reasons to feel stress, anxiety and unease: we can very easily find it. In fact, we’re all addicted to that shit. Let’s break the cycle, let’s make our lives a little happier and spread some of that around. I’m calling on each of you to be mindful with your social media usage. Try to avoid getting sucked into the spiral of hate, fear and shit to be pissed off about. Try and avoid drama, gossip and shit-talking as much as possible. Instead, see the ways you can use your presence (in real life and on social media) to be a positive influence on the world around you. For me, that currently means regular posting about things I think are cool, or things I’m grateful for. I want to spread that around. I want people thinking about what makes life awesome and worthwhile, not what makes life a suffering hell-hole of shit. You know what’s cool? Being nice. You know what else is cool? Being happy. We all have a lot more power to be happy and to help others do the same than we realize. So go on then. Get busy.
xoxo,
M
