Tying your shoes
The basic premise behind mindfulness is that if we pay full attention to the present moment we will find perfection. It doesn’t matter if we’re tying our shoes or looking at the Mona Lisa-as long as we are connected we can experience a depth that enriches our lives. In a moment of true connection (not just thinking about connection) our mind settles down and we reach a state of being. This is about doing, rather than thinking about doing. It’s about embodiment and absolute immersion into the human experience.
In every moment we have a choice: whether to connect or disconnect to the present moment. When we keep death close to our hearts, we realize the answer should always be connection. This life is short, certainly too short to spend our days mindlessly scrolling through social media while life passes us by. It’s easy to get sucked into the trap. If you live on facebook, it might seem that everything is awful and the whole world is fucked. If you log out though, you might see the truth for yourself. The internet is a very different place than the real world. The real world, when fully engaged, is everything.
Sure, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. A lot of stuff in the real world is fucking awful. But the real world is where we can make a difference. The real world is where we tap into compassion, and wisdom and love. Live your life how you see fit, just make sure to check in regularly. Are your habits increasing your connection to the beauty of life?
