Nobody ever got anywhere by being "realistic"
Being realistic is an incredibly limiting way to be. It’s an excuse for not doing things, it’s the ego’s attempt at protecting us from failure. However once we accept there is not such thing as failure, we begin to see there’s nothing to fear, and that in fact what is and isn’t “realistic” is a matter of how open we are.
Playing in a punk band isn’t a “realistic” career choice, yet here I am. Becoming a published author isn’t “realistic” yet now it is my new normal. Finding your soulmate…you get the point. I’m not special, I’ve simply refused to be told what is and isn’t realistic.
Throughout history the greatest achievements have been by those who refused to be told what is and isn’t realistic. Computers that live in our pockets? The abolishment of slavery? Walking on the fucking moon? Can you see how none of these things were realistic at a certain point in time? That didn’t stop people from making these things happen.
Complete reform of a corrupt government, and an end to systemic racism isn’t “realistic,” yet I believe that’s exactly what we are witnessing right now. It’s happening because the norm isn’t fucking working, it hasn’t worked for a long time. People are fed up and although change seems so difficult, it’s also necessary. We’re refusing to accept that change isn’t “realistic.” Change is the ultimate fucking reality, change is TRUTH.
In fact, change isn’t difficult, not in the way we tend to think of difficulty at least. Difficult implies a sense of struggle, but the difference between struggle and effort is internal. Yes, there is a lot of effort involved, but we can be joyful about the effort and the fruits of those efforts. The struggle can end today, and every step moving forward we can be joyful in our efforts, changing the world, refusing to accept what we’ve been told is or isn’t realistic. We can change the fucking world. We can change our lives this very second.
You can be the change you want to see. YOU can make a difference. If each of us realizes we are powerful beyond what we’ve been told, then we all come together…holy shit. There’s nothing we cannot do. Realistic is subjective. Realistic, is bullshit. It’s time to throw out your stories about what is and isn’t realistic. It’s time to write your own reality. Keep moving forward.
Fuck being realistic. Be a dreamer. Make a difference. Start this very second.
